Our Moving Home Checklist

Moving Home? Here’s Your Ultimate Moving Day Checklist

Moving home is exciting — but let’s be honest, it can also be a bit overwhelming. Between packing boxes and chasing solicitors, it’s easy to forget the little things that make a big difference on moving day.

That’s why we’ve created a simple, practical Moving Guide — designed to help you stay organised and stress-free throughout the process. Whether you’re a first-time buyer or a seasoned mover, this checklist covers all the essentials that often get overlooked.

Before the Move

Preparation is everything when you’re moving home. In the weeks leading up to your move:

  • Sort your services: List your utility providers (gas, electric, broadband, etc.) and cancel anything you won’t need.
  • Book your removals: Vans and movers get snapped up quickly — don’t leave it too late.
  • Start packing early: Begin with non-essentials and declutter as you go.
  • Get insured: Your new home should be covered from the moment you exchange contracts.
  • Pack an essentials box: Think kettle, mugs, tea bags, toilet roll — trust us, you’ll thank yourself later.

On Moving Day

One of the most stressful parts of moving home is the actual day itself — but this checklist keeps things under control:

  • Take final meter readings (photos are best).
  • Double-check every room, cupboard, loft and shed.
  • Defrost the freezer the night before.
  • Collect all keys and confirm handover with your agent.
  • Keep your phone fully charged — you’ll need it.

After the Move

The final steps of moving home are about getting settled — and safe.

  • Take new meter readings and notify your suppliers.
  • Change the locks — better safe than sorry.
  • Test smoke alarms and locate the stopcock, fuse box and boiler.
  • Register with a local GP and update your address with banks and services.
  • Most importantly — put the kettle on and enjoy your new home!

Some FAQ's about the process of moving

Once your finances are sorted, we recommend starting 4–6 weeks before your move. Book your removals as early as possible — they get booked quickly.

Include your kettle, mugs, tea bags, toilet roll, phone charger, snacks, and any medications or important paperwork.

Taking final and new meter readings protects you from overpaying. Notify providers before and after you move to avoid service disruption.
